DIY COSTUME

Last week a lot of people in the South of the Netherlands dressed up in all kinds of creatures; e.g. on Monday morning I came across a gnome on my way to work. Carnival is a big celebration that happens just before spring each year. I think it's kind of nice that people show their costumes in big parades on the streets. And I can imagine that people enjoy the moment of celebrating together in the pubs.

I personally don't like this festival. The city center gets very crowded, people drink a lot and the music has this annoying, plain, continuous beat and superficial lyrics.

Although, friends of mine convinced me to go to some sort of carnival-party; there wouldn't be carnival-music but you still had to wear a costume. As I had no costume I quickly made something out of stuff I had lying around.
I used the shape of my favorite hoodie as basis on a piece of brown fabric. Cut a shoulder pad in half - the ears. Stitched light yellow fabric onto the hoodie as base for the face. Used another piece of brown fabric for the eyes and a red button for the nose. An extra piece of woolen brown fabric functioned as a tale:

In the end the party was quite nice, and I think the quick costume worked out fine!

What do you think of carnival? Do you celebrate it?

PROJECT CONTINUES | WINTER JACKET

Since winter still didn't commence around here in the Netherlands I got some extra time to finish my winter jacket. I've been working on it in my spare time whilst drinking a good cup of jasmin tea. I added an extra pocket and decided the jacket can be worn inside-out as well. The inside has such a lovely pattern.

It's almost finished now, you can already wear it. But I'm not totally satisfied with the result, so I will tweak it somewhat in the upcoming days before winter really starts.

SHOP | FILM SLIDE NECKLACES

New item in shop: Film Slide Necklaces

Some time ago I found these old film slides in a second-hand shop in Antwerp, Belgium. I turned them into necklaces. The slides show pictures of day-to-day life, holidays and special occasions of families that I never met. It allows you to imagine what the story behind the picture could be. I like that, creating your own imaginary story.

PROJECT | WINTER JACKET

Although summer is still around us I continued making my new jacket for upcoming winter. I started a while ago but unfortunately the graduation project took all of my time so I had to leave this aside. As you can see the inner part is starting to build up. Tomorrow I will look for some strings and buttons at the weekly textiles market that I can use to shape the jacket.

PATCHWORK-PROJECT

collecting pieces | organizing the plain colours | fill with print pieces | sew | first rows of patchwork

Over the past days I continued my patchwork-project. A while ago I already cut some old clothes and other textiles into square pieces. Now I brought the pieces together into a nice composition and started sewing them together.

NEW PROJECT | WINTER JACKET

My old handmade winter jacket.

This is my old winter jacket. I made it by hand a couple of years ago. It was the first piece of clothing I ever made. Since I did not know how to make a jacket I based the pattern-making on one of my favorite jackets (which unfortunately was totally worn out). It took me a long time to finish it, but in the end I was happy with the result.

Fabrics for new winter jacket.

Right now, 3 years later, I have decided to make a new winter jacket (for next year's winter). Yesterday morning I went to the market to shop for fabrics, I found a beautiful woolen black-grey textile which will be perfect for the jacket. I still had the woolen textile with the Nordic print, which I bought last October. Furthermore I will use a black smooth textile for the lining.
The jacket will be based on a pattern of BURDA that I ordered online, it has a poncho-shape. Now I have to wait for the pattern to arrive. When there's any progress I will let you know!

I'M BACK

It has been a while since I updated my blog. I've had some very busy and chaotic days due to deadline-work for my study. I even forgot to buy breakfast one day! The Netherlands look very fairytale-like at the moment because of the snow. I am happy that I've got some free time ahead, I'm thinking of making a nice walk in tomorrow.
Snowy view from my window.

Handmade candle.

A few weeks ago I went on a little trip together with Paul to Antwerp, Belgium. We ate the usual Belgium Waffles, went to FoMu (Photo Museum) and visited a couple of nice second-hand shops.
I bought a beautiful reversal film in one of the shops of a family I don't know, I'm wondering when the picture was taken and where.

DIY LABELING

Finally a new post! I've been ill in bed over the last week, but I'm happy to be out of bed now. I'm moving around again carefully and creating small things. I made these labels for my cables because I never can distinguish which one is what, they all look the same.

DIY labels - ingredients

I used a blue checkered ribbon with a white lace on one side, a pen and a needle with red thread. I wrote the name of the object (which belongs to the cable) on the ribbon. I wrapped it around the cable and fixed it with a stitch of red thread.

The labels aren't only functional, they also add a personal twist.
Hope you are having a good weekend.

TEALIGHT JARS

The other day I made these little cute tealight jars.

Cute Tealight Jars with Dutch Delft printed Textile Bands.

Cute Tealight Jars with Dutch Delft printed Textile Bands.

The jars used to contain organic yoghurt, yummy! I bought the jars in Antwerp a few years ago when I lived there (I was on an internship for a couple of months). I cut straps out of a white cotton textile with a Dutch Delft print and wrapped them around the jars as a band. The light of the candles shines beautifully through the textile!

Currently I'm thinking about adding the tealight to my Etsy-shop. However, I still have to find a way to pack the Tealight jars for shipping. Have a nice week.

DOUBLE-SIDED

Today I updated my Shop on Etsy. I added a new design which I finished yesterday: “Laptop Sleeve Brown Soft Wool Vs. Flowery Grey” The brown wool is so nice & soft and it matches perfectly with the grey floral pattern, I love it!

New Design: Laptop Sleeve Brown Soft Wool Vs. Flowery Grey.

As you can see you can choose which side to show by turning the sleeve inside-out and the other way around. I also took new pictures of the other designs to show the double-sided option of each design.

Double-Sided Laptop Sleeve Dutch Delft Blue.

The Dutch Delft Blue can also be turned inside-out to show the Plain Blue side.

Double-Sided Laptop Sleeve Tanzanian Pink.

And the Tanzanian Pink has a beautiful clean Off-White Cotton side! Hope you like it as well.

Have a nice weekend, Liefs!

RAINY SUNDAY AFTERNOON

Rainy Sunday afternoon.

Starting a new Sleeve Design.

Holland knows a lot of rainy Sunday afternoons, just like this Sunday. So what better to do than to stay in and to create a new sleeve design! The sleeve will soon be finished and added to my shop. Hope you've had a good weekend as well.

A NEW LAPTOP SLEEVE

Today I added a new Laptop Sleeve to my Etsy Shop: the Dutch Delft Blue Sleeve. Just like the Tanzanian Pink Sleeve I can make it into any size you like. From now on my sleeves are also available for an iPad!

Furthermore I went to the market the other day where I found these inspiring textiles. Maybe I will use them in one of my future designs.

WELCOME!

Hee! And Welcome to my first blogpost.
Finally after some time and effort I was able to open my very own Etsy-shop: JulieHornix. Now it’s just a small shop with my first listing, the Tanzanian Pink Batik Laptop Sleeve. But it will continue to grow with more designs of laptop sleeves and probably other stuff! I hope you like it, I will keep you posted.

I will also show and tell about my daily experiences. When I am not busy with Etsy or finishing my Master degree in Industrial Design I like to cook for friends, sew other things or go on little trips to explore the world!
